Nov.5th - 8th

Hi Class,

This week will be a short week, as it is a 4 day school week due to the non-instructional day on Friday. It will also feel shorter because of Take Our Kids to Work (TOKTW), which is happening on Wednesday November 7th.

On Monday, there will be an assembly for the entire period to prepare you for TOKTW day. This really only leaves us Tuesday and Thursday to get any work done. ( I know you're very disappointed! ) ;)

We will go over the Money Circle, which I handed out on Friday and you can expect a short quiz on that very soon (either Thursday or next week). Also, we will do chapter and review questions this week in preparation for the Ch.4 test next week. Date is T.B.A. (To Be Announced). I will also hand back your business plans and presentations, which I am nearly finished marking.

Finally, this is my final week of teaching you before I hand the reins over to the teacher replacing me for my mat leave.

I wish you all the very best of luck with the rest of the semester and hope you enjoy the rest of Business Ed.

Take care and see you next year!

Sept.25-28th

 Hi Class,

Chapter Test
On Tuesday, September 25th you will have your first chapter test on Chapter 1. DO NOT FORGET and please use the extra day you have with Monday's Pro-D to study! Study tips include:
  • Read all of your notes
  • Read the entire chapter in the textbook

Good luck!!!

Current Events
Reminder: This coming Tuesday September 25th and Friday September 28th we will have our first 'Current Events' presentations. If this is you, ensure you are watching the news. The 6:00pm news on Global TV or CTV are good places to start. Look at CBC.ca, The Vancouver Sun, The Province, or The Financial Post to start. I've added these links to my main page under "Useful Links" for easy access. Also check the newsreel I have cleverly named "Current Events" on the left-hand side of my blog underneath the links!!
Ask your parents to help you if you're not sure if the event you found is appropriate. Remember it must be business-related and affect Canada/Canadian business/Canadian consumers in some way. Hints for possible topics include:

  • businesses opening or closing > job creation or job loss resulting
  • taxes > affect consumer spending/cost of doing business
  • cost of living > affects real estate market and spending
  • news on the housing market
  • companies merging together
  • specific companies or brands introducing or cutting products
  • product launch (new product introduced to market) > increased competition?
  • product recall
  • natural disaster that could affect an industry, trade or business Ex: an oil spill off the BC coast could affect our fishing industry, the volcanic eruption of ash last year disrupted flights, drought or poor weather could affect crops or orchards
  • changes in gas prices > affect costs of doing business, shipping costs, consumer spending, car sales
  • international news that can directly impact Canadian business  Ex: America's Job Act
Hopefully this will give you an idea of the type of things to look for. Please don't leave it to the last minute!

I look forward to seeing you all this coming week and especially to hearing your current events! :)

See you in class :)

Sept.17-21

Hi Class,
Last week we finished learning about Supply & Demand, graphing how changes in the marketplace affect Supply and demand, and the resulting effect on price and quantity. You will have a quiz on Supply and Demand on Monday the 17th. We will then continue through the Ch.1 notes package and I will assign you the Review Questions in your textbook. We will be correct those questions and do some review for the test. I have not yet set a test date, but you can be sure it will be soon (possibly the end of the this week or early next week. It just depends on the class' progress.) Please be sure to be in class for the review and prepare well for the exam so that you can get an A+

See you in class.

Monday, 10 September 2012

Sept.10-14

Hi Class,

For the next couple of days we will be learning about Economic Resources, also known as "Factors of Production". We started talking about this last week. If you recall, there are three main factors of production :
  1. Natural resources
  2. Human resources
  3. Capital resources
+ Intermediate goods
We will learn about how all of these resources are combined to create a finished product that we know and love...Jeans! We will be doing a research activity online to find out how entrepreneur, Levi Strauss, came up with the idea to make the popular denim that we still wear today. The activity is called  The Productive Blues. In completing this activity you will discover and then categorize all of the economic resources used to make denim. Then we will watch a video to see all of the different steps involved in the manufacturing process. You'll never look at a pair of jeans the same again!

When you are finished we will review the assignment as a class and then watch a video that illustrates the entire process of how jeans are made. The video we watched in class is below:

    September 2012

Welcome to Business Education 10 :)

I'm really looking forward to teaching you this semester!

For the first few weeks of school we will be looking at a variety of topics to introduce you to the concept of "What is Business?"  I warn you, as this is your first look at business there is A LOT of ground to cover...the 'building blocks' of business you could say. You may feel a bit of 'information overload' at first, but don't worry. Not all chapters will be as big as Chapter 1 and we will go through the content slowly together. Just make sure to pay attention in class and take good notes! If you learn as you go, it should all make sense and not seem like so much come test time.  Anyway, in the first few weeks we will start Chapter 1 in our textbook, " The World of Business 4th Ed" (as seen below). We will be defining business and then looking at the following topics:

    • Types of Business Ownership
    • Goods & Services
    • Needs vs Wants/Essential vs Luxury Goods and Services
    • Economic Resources aka 'Factors of Production' (Natural, Human, Capital Resources)
    • Supply, Demand, and Price & the relationship between them
    • Factors that affect supply and demand
    • Supply and Demand graphing
    • Interdependence in business
    • Business Decision-making Model
This is just an overview of the main topics we will be looking at. Stay tuned for more detailed posts on a more weekly basis.

    See you in class! :)

    Week of June 11 - 15th

    Hi Class,

    Ch.13 Test-Missed

If you missed the Ch.13 test on Friday you will have to stay after school to write it. I will only be staying one day after school for this make-up test so those who were absent will have to all agree to write on the same day or make arrangements to write another day in the office.

    This week: Ch.14- Credit

We just finished learning about banking and writing cheques. This week, we will look at the final chapter of the course- Ch.14 on Credit. This is one of the most important and interesting chapters of the course- Save the best for last right??! Please don't be away if you can help it, because as I said, we will be moving through the material very fast! We are pressed for time with only one full week of classes left and I'd like to give you class time to study and review for the final exam too!

    Final Exam Date Set
Also note, that as discussed last week, the Final Exam will be held Monday June 18th- No if, but's or maybes. DO NOT BE ABSENT THAT DAY!!! Don't be "sick", Don't sleep in, Don't schedule a doctor or dentist appointment or anything else that day!!!

    Sunday, 3 June 2012

    Week of June 4 - 8th

    Hi Class,

This week we will be continuing with Ch.13 on banking. Last week we looked at the difference between chequing and savings accounts, types of transactions, current accounts, bank plans, and writing cheques! You learned how to properly fill out a cheque, about stop payments, staledated and postdated cheques, as well as how to keep an up-to-date balance in a cheque register.

This week you will learn about 'holds' on cheques, the cheque-clearing process, MICR encoding, NSF cheques, and the many other banking services that banks provide, such as:
    • direct deposit
    • preauthorized debits
    • money orders
    • drafts
    • traveler's cheques
    • loans
    • lines of credit
    • credit cards & revolving credit
    • foreign currency
    • safety deposit boxes
    • nightly depositories
    • online/telephone banking
There is a fair amount of information to cover this week, but we should be able to get through it all by mid-week. Be prepared for a chapter test on this soon. We'll discuss a date, but it will likely be this Friday or next Monday at the latest.

We have one more chapter to study...Ch.14-Credit before the final exam. We will look at and set a date for that too. Please be in class on time and ready to learn!

Don't forget our final remaining 'make-up' current event presentations on Tuesday and Friday!

    See you in class!

    Monday, 21 May 2012

    Week of May 22nd - 26th

    Hi Class,

Last week we looked at compound interest, the Rule of 72 and the calculations for those. We also studied the 5 common types of savings plans: savings account, Term Deposits, GIC's, RRSP's and RESP's. This coming week we'll be looking at different types of investments. While saving and investing are closely linked and very similar, there is a distinct difference. Saving is simply putting money aside for future use, whereas investing is locking money away for the purposes of making more money.

One of the main types of investments is stocks, so this week we'll be looking at the stock market. I'll explain how it works, as well as how to read a stock quote. You'll then have the chance to go online and look up stock quotes yourself. I'll also show you a video on saving strategies.

As investments is the last section of this chapter, you can expect a chapter test on it in the near future. However, we will have to see how far we get this week. The test will either be Friday or next Tuesday. We'll discuss it together as a class!

Don't forget current events presentations this week!

    See you in class!

    Sunday, 6 May 2012

    Week of May 7-12th

    Hi Class,

This week we will be starting Ch.9 on Marketing. As Marketing was my major in university, it is definitely one of my favorite chapters to teach. Marketing is all around us, everywhere and everything, from the most glamorous products such as luxury cars and perfume to the most essential and mundane, like toilet paper and soap, is marketed! We will look at product life cycles, different types of advertising and promotion, publicity, etc. There is also some key information back in Ch.6 that we will look at briefly which breaks down brand names, logos and slogans, which are all very important to marketing.

Don't forget, on Monday your Business Economics Cartoon assignment is due, and we have two new presenters for Current Events this week, on Tuesday and Friday.

Have a great week and see you in class!

    Friday, 27 April 2012

This is what the following week will look like:

    Monday

    • Review Crossword- work time and correct
    • Class Review/Study Time

    Tuesday
    • Ch.5 Test
    • Business/Economics Cartoon Assignment
    • Explain & Start in remaining time
    Wednesday
    • Discuss key points in Ch.6, 7 and 8
    • Start Ch.9- Marketing

    Thursday
    • Barriers to Market Entry
    • Channels of Distribution
    • Brand Management Strategies
    • Market Research
    Friday
    • Non-instructional Day
This is a really fun chapter. Marketing was my major in university when I got my Business degree, so I love it. It is really interesting, because absolutely every product/service out there has to be marketed. Without it, nothing would get sold!

    • what makes a business successful
    • economies of scale

    • the government's influence on businesses
This chapter should really bring everything together for you and help you better understand the economy, particularly the concept of economies of scale and how that works, as well as inflation...something that is at work as we speak. It is important to understand this and how it impacts both individuals as well as businesses.

Please bring a calculator to class on Tuesday. You will need it ;)

    See you in class!

    Week of April 10-13th

    Hi Class,

As I'm sure you all remember, this Tuesday April 10th your Small Business Plans are due! Be ready to hand them in first thing on Tuesday. Remember too that your presentations are due next Monday the 16th. You will not have anymore class time to work on them but you have plenty of time outside of class if there are any last minute changes or things to get done. Be prepared to present them in class on Monday the 16th!

This week we will be starting Ch.4 in the textbook, which focuses on Business and the Community. This is one of my favorite chapters because it really ties everything we've been studying thus far together and exemplifies just how important business is to our economy. This chapter you'll learn about things like: gentrification, GDP, Standard of Living and Quality of Life, see how Canada ranks, as well as learn about the different phases of the business cycle, and just what the Great Depression really was and the effect it had on business and the community.

Please ensure you're in class everyday and please bring your textbook don't forget about Current Events if you are the ones presenting this week!

    See you in class!

    Sunday, 1 April 2012

    Week of April 2- 5th

    Hi Class,

This week we only have 4 days and 5 classes before your small business plan is due on Tuesday April 10th, so you'll be working solely on your projects this week. Please look at the marking rubric which is accessible from the 'Important Handouts' list on the left-hand side of my blog!

You should also have time to work on your presentation as well, although the due date for that will be later. Of course we will still have our regular Current Events presentation on Tuesday.

Also, I will post updated marks this week so you know what your progress is and if you have any missing assignments to get caught up on.

    See you in class!

    Sunday, 25 March 2012

    Week of Mar 26 - Mar.30th

    Hi Everyone!

Before the break you wrote your Ch.3 Tests and then you started watching a video called 'The Seven Sins of the Marketplace', which was all about the misleading tactics advertisers use to lure consumers into buying! Upon your return we will finish watching that video.

If you were away on Friday March 9th and missed the Ch.3 Test, be prepared to write it upon your return!!! There are no excuses! Also, if you have missed any other tests, you need to make arrangements with me ASAP to make them up. Any longer and you will miss the re-write opportunity.

I have finished marking your Ch.3 Tests and most of your Consumer Behavior projects, but couldn't take the larger projects home with me over the break. I'll do my best to finish marking the rest this week so I can get your marks to you very soon.

This week you will be assigned a Small Business Plan assignment that in the past has always been a favorite project of students, as it allows a lot of creative thought on your parts. It ties in nicely with Unit 1 as a cumulative learning assignment, since we just finished learning about the different types of business, different types of legal ownerships, their respective pros and cons, as well as financing options! I'll explain it in detail in class on Monday!

On Friday I"m pleased to announce that we will be having a guest speaker come to class. Please be on time and be on your best behavior! ;) Since we are having this speaker on Friday, that day's current event presentation will be pushed a day earlier to Thursday instead of Friday. Since you've had the 2 weeks over the break to look at current events, I don't see this being a problem!

    See you in class!

    Saturday, 3 March 2012

    Week of Mar.5 - Mar.9th

    Hi Everyone,

This is just a quick reminder that on Thursday March 8th your Consumer Behavior projects are due. With the 3 day job action, along with the extension I had already given you, there should be absolutely no reason your projects are not done and handed in on Thursday! DO NOT procrastinate! Make good use of the extra time you have so that you don't have homework to do over spring break!

On Thursday in class we will correct the Ch.3 Review questions that were assigned last Friday so ensure they are done. We will review in class for the Ch.3 Test on Friday March 9th. I want to get this test done before the break while the information is still fresh! That way 'spring break' will truly be a nice clean break and we'll start on the next chapter when we return.

On Friday also, we will have our two current event presentations so Hannah and Trina, be ready! :)

See you in class later next week...

    Sunday, 26 February 2012

Also, there will be new Current Event Presentations Tuesday and Friday as well. Please check your date and ensure you are prepared! There were a lot of great stories in the news over the weekend so you have a lot to choose from!

On Monday and Tuesday you will have more class time to finish your Consumer Behavior project. It is due on Monday March 5th so although you won't have Wed-Fri class time, you'll have the weekend to finish it.Ensure that it is done!

Wednesday-Friday we will move on to Ch.3, which focuses on starting a business and the different types of ownership.

Have a great week and see you in class :)

You had a quiz on Supply and Demand as well. We finished the Ch.1 notes and you were assigned the Review Questions in your textbook. On Monday we will be correcting those questions and doing some review for the test. I have decided to change the test date to give you more time to study for this exam. The Ch.1 Test will be Thursday Feb.16th. Please be sure to be in class for the review and prepare well for the exam so that you can get an A+

    Chapter 2
In the meantime, we will be moving on to Ch.2, which deals with Consumer Behavior. This is a short and fun chapter. You will learn about the factors that influence consumer behavior, lifestyle advertising, how our choices differ depending on our role and stage in life, etc. You will also do a project on your own consumer behavior! Stay tuned for more on this later in the week.

    Current Events
Last Friday I explained the Current Events assignment to you. On Monday I will be assigning everyone a date to present their Current Event. I went over this in class, but as additional help, I recommend watching the news on TV.

Ask your parents to help you or see me in class if you're not sure if the event you found is appropriate.
Please don't leave it to the last minute and don't forget the Ch.1 Test on Thursday.

Have a great week and see you in class!

    Week of Feb.6-10th

    Hi Business Ed!
Last week we started learning about business and specifically about Economic Resources, also known as "Factors of Production". If you recall, there are three main factors of production :
    1. Natural resources
    2. Human resources
    3. Capital resources
    + a 4th- Intermediate goods
You learned about how all of these resources are combined to create a finished product that we know and love. Hopefully You'll never look at a pair of jeans the same again!

Below is the link for the video that we watched in class in case you would like to watch it again:

    Week of Jan.30th- Feb.3rd

    Hi Everyone,

Well, this is my last post of the semester for your class. First off, if you have any late assignments, Monday is the absolute LAST DAY to hand them in. Secondly, and more importantly, I want to remind you that the Final Exam, worth 20% of your course grade, is also MONDAY JANUARY 23rd! I've posted the Study Tips sheet under "Important Handouts" in case you lost the sheet I gave you on Friday. Please read through all of your notes and practice your calculations for:

    Also, REMEMBER TO BRING:

    • Calculator
    • 1 sheet of loose leaf paper

You will need all of these things for the final exam, especially a pencil, as you will be answering the questions on a Scantron sheet!

    Bring your own drink!
On Tuesday, which is our double block, we will begin watching a movie that is a romantic comedy, that also deals with Credit and Personal Finance! Some of you may have seen it before, but even so, after learning about credit, it should mean a lot more! At lunch time we will celebrate the end of the course by having our "Class of the Month" pizza party!!!  PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN DRINK!!! The school is providing the pizza, but not a drink, so remember to bring your favorite beverage to class. You will have an opportunity to leave the room over the lunch break of course to buy one if you forget. You will also get your Class of the Month Certificates that day as well.

On Wednesday, the very last day of class, we will go over the final exam. I'll have your final exam marks, as well as your final mark for the course ready.

Let me just say 'Thank you' for being such a great bunch to teach this semester. I"ll miss you! I've really enjoyed teaching you and sincerely hope you have a new perspective and understanding of business, the economy, and your role in both! I wish you the best of luck next semester and in the future. I hope I'll get the chance to teach at least some or all of you again!

    Take care.

    -Ms.Sundin :)

Congratulations once again to my "Class of the Month"! :) I'm so very glad that you've finally gotten the recognition you deserve. Nominating you (for the 3rd time) finally paid off. It was my way of thanking you all for being such a great bunch of students and making this course so fun to teach! I'm hoping we can have our pizza party on Tuesday Jan.24th. That is our double-block and would be a fun way to celebrate the day after the final exam! :) I have a fun movie that deals with credit to show you so that will be the perfect way to end the course.

We still have the Ch.13 test on Tuesday January 17th as well as Ch.14 on Credit to study. I’ll explain all of the different types of transactions and financial services offered at a bank, as well as teach you how to write a cheque and keep an up-to-date transaction register. Since I have worked part-time at a bank over the last 5 years, this is one of my favorite chapters to teach! It is also incredibly relevant and useful, because everyone has to have a bank account, including you someday if you don't already!

    See you in class!

    Week of Jan.3 -6

    Welcome Back Everyone!

Starting Tuesday we will review the Stock Market and do two activities related to reading stock quotes. We will then do the end-of-chapter questions and review for the Ch.11 test. We will discuss it as a class, but the test date will have to be soon, as we have very little time left in the semester.  We will then be moving on Chapter 13 on Banking. Please remember to bring your calculator to class with you.

    See you in class!
