Week of Oct.31- Nov.4

Hi Everyone!

Last week we started Ch.4 of the textbook "Business and the Community" and read/discussed different economic systems, the private vs. the public sector, privatization and its pros and cons, and started talking about the impact businesses have on the economy in terms of generation of jobs, creation of wealth, standard of living and quality of life, etc. We will look more in depth at the latter two topics this week and will be researching and comparing countries around the world to see which ones have the best quality of life, which have the worst, and where Canada falls into the mix.

Before we can get back into this topic though, we have a few things on the agenda. Here is the intended plan for the week:

Monday
-Small Business Plan- written report and brochure is due
-Take Our Kids to Work preparation, discussion of workplace etiquette and safety, workplace safety video and discussion

Tuesday (double block)
-Current Events presentation
-Small Business Plan- Presentation instruction- I will explain how to set up your project and teach you how to make a Prezi as an alternative to a Power Point (in case you'd like to try it)
-Small Business Plan Presentation work time

Wednesday
-TAKE OUR KID TO WORK day out in the work world + worksheet for HACE 9.
* Those students who do not have a place to go should come to class as usual and will work on their Career Research project for HACE 9.

Thursday
-Standard of Living, Quality of Life and research different countries and their standings

Friday
- Current Events Presentation; Public City Services- research what services the City of Surrey provides; Gentrification-urban renewal in our cities

If time remains, and if not, next week for sure:
Business Cycles, Video on the Great Depression

Take Our Kids to Work- Wednesday Nov.2nd

This is just an important reminder that your 'Take Our Kids to Work' consent forms must be signed and returned to the Career Center BOX at the office by Monday October 31st!!!

This does not leave you much time! Ensure you talk to your parents about it tonight so they have time to consult their employers or employer's of their friends/relatives. I know this is fast so you have to be organized and get on it! Don't forget you can also pair up with a friend and go to their workplace as long as you have permission. This is an all day event and a small assignment package must be completed by Thursday November 3rd to fulfill your HACE 9 mark. It will be based on what you learn as you shadow someone at work.

If you do not, or are not able to, participate in this program, you will be expected to attend your regular class as usual and will work independently on a small career research project instead. It too must be completed by Thursday November 3rd to fulfill your HACE 9 mark.

Don't forget your consent forms! Get them signed and have a fun learning experience outside of school!!!

Week of Oct.24-28th

Hi Class,

Last week I assigned you a rather large "Small Business Plan" as some of you pointed out! :) Most of you have made great progress last week. By now you should have your rough draft (main ideas for #1-10) completely done and are working on writing your content in proper paragraphs, editing/proofreading, etc. On Monday, I will review how to make a brochure and give you some more class time to start that, as well as to start typing your good copy. You will only have Monday and Tuesday in class to work on this. The rest of the work on the report and brochure must be done in your own time. Remember, the due date for the written report and brochure is Monday, October 31st.

On Wednesday I will pass back your Ch.3 Tests and go over the answers with you. Then we will be starting Ch.4 which deals with Business and the Community. We will be studying such topics as:
  • Economic systems (command, pure market, modern-mixed)
  • The Private vs. the Public sector
  • The Impact of Business on the Community (generation of wealth, jobs, income, the effect on standard of living and quality of life, city services, etc.)
  • The Business Cycle
  • GDP
  • and much more!!
This chapter will really tie in the idea of 'Interdependence' and how business really affects the community!

I will also show you videos on Capitalism and the Great Depression as they relate to the topics we'll be discussing.

Stay tuned...this is one of my favorite chapters!

Don't forget your current events presentations this week! On Monday we will have two (to make up for Friday's missed class, and one on Thursday)!

See you in class!

Week of Oct. 17-21

Hi Class!

This week, as you know, you have your Chapter 3 Test on Monday, Oct.17th. Don't forget & be prepared!! Remember to study properly. This does not mean just reading over your notes. It means actively testing your recall through verbal and written quizzing! It is much easier to recall something when the answers are provided in a multiple choice format, than when you have to truly recall the information in a short answer situation. We did quite a bit of review in class, but here is an overview of the main points, along with a few study tips:
  • Read the Profile at the beginning of the chapter. (Hint: What kind of business is the Post Road Tea Room?)
  • Review all of the bold vocabulary terms throughout the chapter
  • What is a "bricks & mortar" business vs. an "e-commerce" business?
  • What does "soho" stand for? (Small Office Home Office)
  • What are the 3 different types of businesses based on what they make or sell (Manufacturing, Retail, Service)
  • What are the 4-5 types of business ownership? (Sole-proprietorship, Partnership, Corporation, Cooperative + Franchise)
  • What are the different types of cooperatives? (Consumer, Retail, Worker)
  • What is the difference between a corporation and a cooperative?
  • What is the difference between a general partnership agreement and a limited partnership agreement?
  • Can you name at least one of the most important advantages and disadvantages for each type of business ownership?
  • What are the 4 different types of corporations ( Public, private, Crown, municipal)
  • Can you tell the difference between different types of Crown corporations? (Ex: Canada Post is a federally-owned Crown corp. BC Hydro is a provincially-owned Crown corp. Often the name gives a clue!)
I hope this helps you with your studying. Good luck!

Small Business Plan Project

Following our test, you will be assigned another project- a Small Business Plan project! This is your chance to demonstrate what you have learned as you plan your own type of business. This is a three-part project that includes:
  1. Written Paper
  2. Brochure
  3. Presentation
I know you will ask me if you can work with other students. My answer? That depends on the type of business you want to open! If you want to open a sole-proprietorship, you will have to work alone, just as a true sole-proprietor does. If you want to open a partnership, you will need a partner who shares in your vision and who will share the responsibilities. If you want to open a small private corporation, you will need a small group of three people (Sorry- no groups bigger than three people), but remember, with more people you should be able to do more work and dazzle me with your combined ideas and expertise!

I will go over this project in great detail with you after the test and will post the project online in case you need an extra copy or in the event your parents would like to see it.  Check back in a few days!
DUE DATES:
October 31st- Written Report & Brochure
November 7th- Presentation

Current Events
* Don't forget to prepare for your Current Event presentation on Tuesday if you are presenting. We will have two presentations the following Tuesday because Friday there aren't any classes. Check the sign up sheet for your scheduled date and start watching the news!!!

Have a great week everyone. See you in class!

Week of Oct.11-14

Hi Everyone!
I trust that you've all been working hard over the weekend to get your Consumer Behavior projects finished. You had a WEEK of in-class time with access to the computers, fliers/magazines, scissors, glue, etc. so they should all be done and handed in first thing on Tuesday.

I've marked your Ch.2 tests, but cannot hand them back until everyone has written it. If you were absent on Friday, please be prepared to write the test on Tuesday!

On Tuesday and Friday we will be having our weekly Current Events presentations, so if this is you, please ensure you are ready to present!

On Tuesday through Friday we will be starting Ch.3 which is a fairly short chapter, but one jam-packed with important information :) We will be learning about financing a new business through debt or equity financing, starting up a business, 3 different levels of government:
  1. Federal
  2. Provincial
  3. Municipal

...and we will be taking a more in-depth look at the different types of business ownership:
  • Sole-proprietorship
  • Partnership
  • Cooperative
  • Corporation (private, public, Crown, and municipal)
  • Franchise
We will be learning about each of these, including the advantages and disadvantages of each.

This is a fairly short chapter, so be prepared for another Chapter quiz, fairly soon! When exactly? Well that depends on you and the class progress so the date is T.B.A. (To Be Announced)!

See you in class!

Week of Oct.3-7

Hello my Lovely Students! :)

Last week we finished the Ch.2 notes package I gave everyone, including the three worksheets on Needs & Wants, Values & Goals, and Roles and their influence on Consumer Behavior. You were assigned a Consumer Behavior Project, which includes a Poster and a Written Analysis. If you lost your instructions, please check the IMPORTANT HANDOUTS link for a copy of the assignment. This a a fun and creative assignment that asks you to reflect on your own buying patterns and analyzing what influences you when you shop. Although the assignment calls for a 'poster', don't feel limited to just that. You may be creative in how you present your purchases. Here is an example of fantastic creativity from last year!! Don't feel that you have to go this far above and beyond, and please do not copy this idea. However, let it inspire you to think outside-the-box and have fun with your assignment!

Here is a breakdown of what this week will look like:

Monday- Consumer Behavior Project Outline
(this will help you create a rough draft for your paper)
              - Project time

Tuesday- Current Event Presentation
               - Project time (double block)

Wednesday- Ch.2 Review Crossword (complete for Thursday)
                    - Project time

Thursday- Correct Crossword & Test Review

Friday- Current Event Presentation

            - Chapter 2 Test
            - Project time if time permits

Study Tips:
  • Read and review all of the vocabulary terms (bold terms in the textbook)
  • Read and review your notes package
  • Read the entire chapter in the textbook
  • Read the "Profile" at the beginning of the chapter on Modrobes clothing
  • Ensure you know the 6 Factors that Influence Consumer Behavior (Income/Price, Status, Current Trends, Customs & Habits, Safety, Promotion)
  • Ensure you know the 5 reasons people hesitate to buy online
  • Ensure you know the 3 ways that businesses observe and predict consumers buying something
  • Complete the Ch.2 Crossword Review
In addition to reading and reviewing, make study notes (yes, write out the terms and main concepts by hand), and quiz yourself or have a friend, classmate, sibling or parent quiz you on the terms and main topics in the chapter!  Hint: the clues in the crossword would serve as a great review!!

This week you will given a lot of class time for your project.Remember to bring any materials (scissors, markers, glue, magazines/flyers, pictures, posterboard) to class and make good use of your class time! The Consumer Behavior project is Due Tuesday Oct. 11th, so what you don't finish in the class time provided, you can finish on the long weekend if necessary!

See you in class!
