Week of Dec.12-16th

Hello my Business Ed'ers,

First thing on Monday your Advertisement Analysis assignment is due. We will then briefly review what we started studying on Friday:
  • 3 reasons why people save
  • 3 benefits of savings accounts
  • simple vs. compound interest
  • how interest compounds faster the more often it is calculated (daily, weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, quarterly, etc.)
We we will continue on in Ch.11- Saving & Investing, and be learning about different types of savings accounts and investment types. We will be learning about the 'Rule of 72' and the stock market as well. As previously mentioned, you will definitely be needing a calculator for this chapter and for the rest of the unit, so please remember to bring one to class. I have a video to show you on saving and investing as well.

As this is a rather large chapter, we likely won't get through all of it this week, but we will do our best. Depending on where we get to this week, we may start watching a Christmas movie on Thursday. If not Thursday, then Friday for sure we will watch one so now is the time to ask you, which movie would you like to see? The movies I have to choose from include:
  • Elf
  • How the Grinch Stole Christmas (classic cartoon version)
  • How the Grinch Stole Christmas (Jim Carrey version)
  • Home Alone
  • A Christmas Story (little boy and his red rider rifle)
  • One Magic Christmas (mother who doesn't believe in Christmas or Santa)

Week of Dec.12-16th

Hi Everyone,

First thing on Monday your Advertisement Analysis assignment is due. It was assigned a week ago and you had some class time to find an ad and work on it so they should all be handed in on time. I look forward to seeing them soon. I'll also return your business cartoon assignments and your Ch. 9 tests as well.

Don't forget to get your cartoon and "What Was I Thinking?" worksheets in if you haven't already.

This week we will be continuing on in Ch.11- Saving and Investing. Last week we learned the reasons why people save, as well as the benefits of savings accounts in financial institutions. We also studied simple and compound interest. This week we will briefly review that before we continue looking at different types of savings plans, as well as different types of investments. You will learn about the "Rule of 72" and the stock market as well! You will need a calculator for this entire unit so be sure to bring one!

We will watch a Christmas movie the last day or two, depending on how far through the chapter we get this week.

Tuesday and Friday we will have our final current events presentations of 2011.

It will be an interesting and hopefully fun week. See you in class!

Week of Dec.5-9th

Hi Class,

This week will be a busy one. Your Business Cartoon is due Monday, Dec.5th. As you've had over two weeks to do this, plus class time to work on your rough draft, I expect them all to be handed in on time ;) Most of you have shown me your rough copies and they were looking very creative and interesting. I look forward to seeing the finished products! Remember, your cartoon must:
  • Clearly indicate the topic/concept you are illustrating (This means have a title!)
  • Include drawn or computerized images that clearly and cleverly illustrate the issue/concept
  • Be colorful and on plain white paper
  • have labels on all important characters or buildings/stores
  • have clear thought or speech bubbles for your characters that demonstrate the issue
  • Include a point- this means shows a cause-effect sort of relationship
  • include a clear written explanation of the business concept/issue that tells me what your cartoon represents and defines the issue
  • include the mark sheet stapled to your cartoon 
Example:
     On Monday and Tuesday (double block) we will be reviewing Ch.9 in preparation for the Chapter Test on Wednesday Dec.7th. This essentially gives us 3 classes to review which should be more than enough time. I'll also be giving you an "Ad Analysis" assignment. I'll explain this in class and will give you until Monday, Dec.12th to complete it. In the meantime we will be moving on to the next unit of the course- Personal Finance. We will be looking at Savings & Investments, Banking, and Credit for the remainder of the course. You will now need to bring a calculator to class everyday!

    Week of Nov.28-Dec.5

    Hi Class,

    Last week we finished Ch.4 on Business and the Community and then talked about some key issues in Ch.6, 7 and 8. Although we aren't formally studying them, we did look at them briefly. Let's review the key points from each chapter:

    Ch.6- Direct & Indirect Competition, 5 ways products & services compete directly, how an image is created with brand name, logo and slogan, what a market, market share and a target market is, demographics and psychographics, and last but not least, Marketing & the 4P's (Product, Price, Place, and Promotion). This leads us nicely into Ch.9 and what Marketing is all about. We also watched a video on The Power of Brand Names and why they work.

    Ch.7- We also discussed what Human Resource Management  is all about: the labour market, skilled/unskilled and semi-skilled labour, hiring, firing, promoting, demoting, etc., compensation, as well as the rights of both employers and employees.

    Ch.8 focuses on Accounting- the recording and detailed analysis of all financial transactions within a business in order to create financial documents (balance sheet, income statements, etc.) for the purposes of reporting to the government, and more importantly, to make sound business decisions for the future.

    Ch.9, which is the chapter we are jumping to next, deals with Marketing and all aspects of it: the product life cycle of regular products,  niches and fads, types of advertising and their purposes, types of promotion, the difference between advertising, promotion, and publicity, as well as how products move through distribution channels to the end user, you and me (the consumer)!! You will get to watch a few videos on advertising tactics and you will be asked to analyze an advertisement on your own! This is one of my favorite chapters and I'm sure you'll like it too.

    Don't forget your Current Event presentations this week and that you should be working on your Business Cartoon assignment. Please show me your rough/working copy so that I can give you suggestions before you start your good copy. It is due, December 5th (one week from now).

    Week of Nov.21-25

    Hi Everyone,

    Last Friday I was talking about the role the Bank of Canada plays in our economy, especially when it comes to money supply. Many of you had a very difficult time understanding how printing more currency devalues our dollar and I had a difficult time explaining it to you in terms that you could understand. It is a very difficult concept to wrap your head around, because we all make the mistake of assuming bank notes (or dollar bills) are actually worth something. Actually they are just pieces of paper that represent the value printed on them. Without having the actual wealth behind the face value of the bill, bank notes are essentially worthless. Simply put, they are a trading tool.
    I spent a lot of time this weekend trying to figure out how to explain this to you and believe I've worked out a way to do so. I actually made a booklet for you with information and examples, and even tried to make a simple diagram for you to see how Canada's wealth and money supply works if Canada's wealth was only $100 (for easy numbers). It looks something like this:
    You can print a copy for yourself if you wish, or just view it in more detail, from the handout I posted under "Important Handouts".  You can also watch the video that I posted on Friday night (yes, that's right...on my Friday night I was thinking about school and you guys!) in the post right before this one or view it under "Useful Links".
    By the way, I am not even testing you on this. I just want you to understand it, since you were all curious!!

    Anyway, onto this week and what we will be doing:

    Monday- Discuss the Bank of Canada (watch video) and the value of our currency
                  -we will review Ch.5 and I'll give you a review booklet to help you study.


    Tuesday (first block)- Ch.5 Test
                                   - Business Cartoon assignment (explain and assign due date TBA)

                  (second block) - Current Events presentation
                                         - Discuss key concepts in Ch.6- direct and indirect competition,
                                            marketing, the 4P's, demographics, psychographics
                                        - time to work on assignment

    Wednesday- briefly discuss Ch.7 and 8 (HR and Accounting)
                       - start Ch.9- Marketing which covers topics such as: product life cycles,
                         brand names, logos and
                         slogans, types of advertising, promotion and publicity)

    Thursday- Ch.9 continued

    Friday- Ch.9 continued

    During this chapter you will also be given a marketing assignment, where you will be required to analyze an ad in a magazine. I will also show you videos on the power of brand names, advertising tactics, and schemes. This is a great chapter that I know you'll all enjoy. It is likely to take us well into next week. We'll see how far we get.

    How the Bank of Canada Works & Contributes to our Economy

    Here is an excellent video that will show you how the Bank of Canada works to control spending, stabilize inflation, and works to ensure Canadians can be confident in the strength of our financial system. This video is produced by the Bank of Canada and does an excellent job summarizing what we've been talking about in class. It touches on such topics as:
    • The value of our currency
    • Interest rates and how they are used to control inflation
    • Purchasing Power
    • Regulating the financial systems in Canada

    Week of Nov.15-18

    Hi Everyone,

    First off I'd just like to say how much I enjoyed reading your small business plans and presentations! All of your business ideas were both unique and creative, and really exemplified your understanding of basic business concepts. Well done! I'll be handing them back this coming week. There are still a number of students who have not completed their business plan. As this is a large assignment, it is also worth a large number of marks! Get yours in ASAP!!

    This week we will be having our Ch.4 Test on Tuesday Nov.15th and then will be promptly starting Ch.5, which focuses on "What Makes a Business Successful". It is a short chapter that looks at profit, profitability, return on investment, expenses, personal factors that affect business success, as well as outside factors that affect a business' success, such as economic conditions. Of course, we will also look at the top reasons why businesses fail. There are two really important concepts in this chapter: Economies of Scale (Yes, Bikram, we will finally watch "the Walmart video"!!), and Inflation. While there is a lot of information to cover, it is a really brief chapter that we will be moving through very quickly. That means you need to pay attention, stay on top of your textbook questions, review, and be prepared for a test as early as next Monday Nov.21st which is the tentative plan. Also, you will need to bring a calculator this week for some calculations.

    Study Tips/Guidelines for Ch.4 Test
    Ensure that you:
    • know your vocabulary terms and definitions
    • have read and re-read both your notes and textbook chapter
    • know the phases of the business cycle: trough, recovery, peak, recession (not depression-there is a difference!)
    • know and can thoroughly explain the "Money Circle" diagram that we studied in class
    • have reviewed the Ch.4 crossword questions

    Week of Nov.7- Nov.10

    Hi Everyone,

    1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10....I'm counting to ten to try to calm myself!! We have A LOT to do yet in this course and it is already half way through the semester! We have lost a lot of class time due to work time for projects, as well as we virtually lost two classes because of Take Our Kid to Work day! In addition to that, this week and next week are 4 day weeks. As a result we are very much behind so I'm trying not to panic! :) We have a lot to get done this week so let's have a glance at the short week ahead:

    Be prepared to write the test in the first block of the Tuesday back (remember Monday there aren't any classes so you have an extra day to study!!!)

    Study Hints: All the same tips apply for previous test Ex: know your vocab, quiz yourself, and review the crossword. However, also make sure you know the phases of the Business Cycle and can 'explain' the Money Circle (see handout given in class) ;)

    Week of Oct.31- Nov.4

    Hi Everyone!

    Last week we started Ch.4 of the textbook "Business and the Community" and read/discussed different economic systems, the private vs. the public sector, privatization and its pros and cons, and started talking about the impact businesses have on the economy in terms of generation of jobs, creation of wealth, standard of living and quality of life, etc. We will look more in depth at the latter two topics this week and will be researching and comparing countries around the world to see which ones have the best quality of life, which have the worst, and where Canada falls into the mix.

    Before we can get back into this topic though, we have a few things on the agenda. Here is the intended plan for the week:


    Monday
    -Small Business Plan- written report and brochure is due
    -Take Our Kids to Work preparation, discussion of workplace etiquette and safety, workplace safety video and discussion

    Tuesday (double block)
    -Current Events presentation
    -Small Business Plan- Presentation instruction- I will explain how to set up your project and teach you how to make a Prezi as an alternative to a Power Point (in case you'd like to try it)
    -Small Business Plan Presentation work time

    Wednesday
    -TAKE OUR KID TO WORK day out in the work world + worksheet for HACE 9.
    * Those students who do not have a place to go should come to class as usual and will work on their Career Research project for HACE 9.

    Thursday
    -Standard of Living, Quality of Life and research different countries and their standings

    Friday
    - Current Events Presentation; Public City Services- research what services the City of Surrey provides; Gentrification-urban renewal in our cities

    Take Our Kids to Work- Wednesday Nov.2nd

    This is just an important reminder that your 'Take Our Kids to Work' consent forms must be signed and returned to the Career Center BOX at the office by Monday October 31st!!!

    This does not leave you much time! Ensure you talk to your parents about it tonight so they have time to consult their employers or employer's of their friends/relatives. I know this is fast so you have to be organized and get on it! Don't forget you can also pair up with a friend and go to their workplace as long as you have permission. This is an all day event and a small assignment package must be completed by Thursday November 3rd to fulfill your HACE 9 mark. It will be based on what you learn as you shadow someone at work.

    If you do not, or are not able to, participate in this program, you will be expected to attend your regular class as usual and will work independently on a small career research project instead. It too must be completed by Thursday November 3rd to fulfill your HACE 9 mark.

    Don't forget your consent forms! Get them signed and have a fun learning experience outside of school!!!

    Week of Oct.24-28th

    Hi Class,

    Last week I assigned you a rather large "Small Business Plan" as some of you pointed out! :) Most of you have made great progress last week. By now you should have your rough draft (main ideas for #1-10) completely done and are working on writing your content in proper paragraphs, editing/proofreading, etc. On Monday, I will review how to make a brochure and give you some more class time to start that, as well as to start typing your good copy. You will only have Monday and Tuesday in class to work on this. The rest of the work on the report and brochure must be done in your own time. Remember, the due date for the written report and brochure is Monday, October 31st.

    On Wednesday I will pass back your Ch.3 Tests and go over the answers with you. Then we will be starting Ch.4 which deals with Business and the Community. We will be studying such topics as:
    • Economic systems (command, pure market, modern-mixed)
    • The Private vs. the Public sector
    • The Impact of Business on the Community (generation of wealth, jobs, income, the effect on standard of living and quality of life, city services, etc.)
    • The Business Cycle
    • GDP
    • and much more!!
    This chapter will really tie in the idea of 'Interdependence' and how business really affects the community!

    I will also show you videos on Capitalism and the Great Depression as they relate to the topics we'll be discussing.

    Stay tuned...this is one of my favorite chapters!

    Don't forget your current events presentations this week! On Monday we will have two (to make up for Friday's missed class, and one on Thursday)!

    Week of Oct. 17-21

    Hi Class!

    This week, as you know, you have your Chapter 3 Test on Monday, Oct.17th. Don't forget & be prepared!! Remember to study properly. This does not mean just reading over your notes. It means actively testing your recall through verbal and written quizzing! It is much easier to recall something when the answers are provided in a multiple choice format, than when you have to truly recall the information in a short answer situation. We did quite a bit of review in class, but here is an overview of the main points, along with a few study tips:
    • Read the Profile at the beginning of the chapter. (Hint: What kind of business is the Post Road Tea Room?)
    • Review all of the bold vocabulary terms throughout the chapter
    • What is a "bricks & mortar" business vs. an "e-commerce" business?
    • What does "soho" stand for? (Small Office Home Office)
    • What are the 3 different types of businesses based on what they make or sell (Manufacturing, Retail, Service)
    • What are the 4-5 types of business ownership? (Sole-proprietorship, Partnership, Corporation, Cooperative + Franchise)
    • What are the different types of cooperatives? (Consumer, Retail, Worker)
    • What is the difference between a corporation and a cooperative?
    • What is the difference between a general partnership agreement and a limited partnership agreement?
    • Can you name at least one of the most important advantages and disadvantages for each type of business ownership?
    • What are the 4 different types of corporations ( Public, private, Crown, municipal)
    • Can you tell the difference between different types of Crown corporations? (Ex: Canada Post is a federally-owned Crown corp. BC Hydro is a provincially-owned Crown corp. Often the name gives a clue!)

    Small Business Plan Project

    Following our test, you will be assigned another project- a Small Business Plan project! This is your chance to demonstrate what you have learned as you plan your own type of business. This is a three-part project that includes:
    1. Written Paper
    2. Brochure
    3. Presentation
    I know you will ask me if you can work with other students. My answer? That depends on the type of business you want to open! If you want to open a sole-proprietorship, you will have to work alone, just as a true sole-proprietor does. If you want to open a partnership, you will need a partner who shares in your vision and who will share the responsibilities. If you want to open a small private corporation, you will need a small group of three people (Sorry- no groups bigger than three people), but remember, with more people you should be able to do more work and dazzle me with your combined ideas and expertise!

    I will go over this project in great detail with you after the test and will post the project online in case you need an extra copy or in the event your parents would like to see it.  Check back in a few days!
    DUE DATES: 
    October 31st- Written Report & Brochure
    November 7th- Presentation

    * Don't forget to prepare for your Current Event presentation on Tuesday if you are presenting. We will have two presentations the following Tuesday because Friday there aren't any classes. Check the sign up sheet for your scheduled date and start watching the news!!!

    Week of Oct.11-14

    Hi Everyone!
    I trust that you've all been working hard over the weekend to get your Consumer Behavior projects finished. You had a WEEK of in-class time with access to the computers, fliers/magazines, scissors, glue,etc. so they should all be done and handed in first thing on Tuesday.

    I've marked your Ch.2 tests, but cannot hand them back until everyone has written it. If you were absent on Friday, please be prepared to write the test on Tuesday!

    On Tuesday and Friday we will be having our weekly Current Events presentations, so if this is you, please ensure you are ready to present!

    On Tuesday through Friday we will be starting Ch.3 which is a fairly short chapter, but one jam-packed with important information :) We will be learning about financing a new business through debt or equity financing, starting up a business, 3 different levels of government:
    1. Federal
    2. Provincial
    3. Municipal

    ...and we will be taking a more in-depth look at the different types of business ownership:
    • Sole-proprietorship
    • Partnership
    • Cooperative
    • Corporation (private, public, Crown, and municipal)
    • Franchise
    We will be learning about each of these, including the advantages and disadvantages of each.

    This is a fairly short chapter, so be prepared for another Chapter quiz, fairly soon! When exactly? Well that depends on you and the class progress so the date is T.B.A. (To Be Announced)!

    Week of Oct.3-7

    Hello my Lovely Students! :)

     Last week we finished the Ch.2 notes package I gave everyone, including the three worksheets on Needs & Wants, Values & Goals, and Roles and their influence on Consumer Behavior. You were assigned a Consumer Behavior Project, which includes a Poster and a Written Analysis. If you lost your instructions, please check the IMPORTANT HANDOUTS link for a copy of the assignment. This a a fun and creative assignment that asks you to reflect on your own buying patterns and analyzing what influences you when you shop. Although the assignment calls for a 'poster', don't feel limited to just that. You may be creative in how you present your purchases. Here is an example of fantastic creativity from last year!! Don't feel that you have to go this far above and beyond, and please do not copy this idea. However, let it inspire you to think outside-the-box and have fun with your assignment!

     Here is a breakdown of what this week will look like:

    Study Tips:
    • Read and review all of the vocabulary terms (bold terms in the textbook)
    • Read and review your notes package
    • Read the entire chapter in the textbook
    • Read the "Profile" at the beginning of the chapter on Modrobes clothing
    • Ensure you know the 6 Factors that Influence Consumer Behavior (Income/Price, Status, Current Trends, Customs & Habits, Safety, Promotion)
    • Ensure you know the 5 reasons people hesitate to buy online
    • Ensure you know the 3 ways that businesses observe and predict consumers buying something
    • Complete the Ch.2 Crossword Review
    In addition to reading and reviewing, make study notes (yes, write out the terms and main concepts by hand), and quiz yourself or have a friend, classmate, sibling or parent quiz you on the terms and main topics in the chapter!  Hint: the clues in the crossword would serve as a great review!!

    This week you will given a lot of class time for your project.Remember to bring any materials (scissors, markers, glue, magazines/flyers, pictures, posterboard) to class and make good use of your class time! The Consumer Behavior project is Due Tuesday Oct. 11th, so what you don't finish in the class time provided, you can finish on the long weekend if necessary!

    Sept.27-Sept.30

    Congratulations...you have survived your first chapter test! Now you have an idea of the format of the tests for future reference. I will try to get your test results back to you as soon as possible! Don't forget what you have learned in Chapter 1...as it is the foundation for what we will be studying in the coming chapters.

    On Tuesday we will be starting Chapter 2 which focuses on consumer behavior. This is, as you may have guessed, how and why we buy what we buy, the things that influence us when making purchase-decisions, the kinds of questions that we consider before buying, as well as how businesses observe our behavior! This isn't a long chapter, but it is an interesting one.

    Don't forget, there aren't any classes on Monday so I will see you on Tuesday!

    Sept.19-23

    This week we will go over our Supply & Demand graphing and correct the assignments from Friday. Please take the time over the weekend to work through the assignment, so if you have any questions you can ask them on Monday. We will continue in our notes for Chapter 1, talking about competition, interdependence, and decision-making in business. Important Note: Your Chapter 1 test is set for this Friday, September 23rd. We will be reviewing in class on both Wednesday and Thursday.
    I also plan to show a new video we just got in the library called "The Benefits of Buying Canadian". This video touches on several topics we've already discussed in class, including manufacturing, economic resources, interdependence, the pros and cons of outsourcing, how to be competitive in Canada, and how buying Canadian products benefits our economy! Don't miss it!

    Reminder: This coming Tuesday September 20th and Friday September 23rd we will have our first 'Current Events' presentations. If this is you, ensure you are watching the news. The 6:00pm news on Global TV or CTV are good places to start. Look at CBC.ca, The Vancouver Sun, The Province, or The Financial Post to start. I've added these links to my main page under "Useful Links" for easy access. Also check the newsreel I have cleverly named "Current Events" on the left-hand side of my blog underneath the links!!
    Ask your parents to help you if you're not sure if the event you found is appropriate. Remember it must be business-related and affect Canada/Canadian business/Canadian consumers in some way. Hints for possible topics include:
    • businesses opening or closing > job creation or job loss resulting
    • taxes > affect consumer spending/cost of doing business
    • cost of living > affects real estate market and spending
    • news on the housing market
    • companies merging together
    • specific companies or brands introducing or cutting products
    • product launch (new product introduced to market) > increased competition?
    • product recall
    • natural disaster that could affect an industry, trade or business Ex: an oil spill off the BC coast could affect our fishing industry, the volcanic eruption of ash last year disrupted flights, drought or poor weather could affect crops or orchards
    • changes in gas prices > affect costs of doing business, shipping costs, consumer spending, car sales
    • international news that can directly impact Canadian business  Ex: America's Job Act
    Hopefully this will give you an idea of the type of things to look for. Please don't leave it to the last minute!

    'Buy American' provision returns in Obama's jobs act - Canada - CBC News

    Today in class I explained the Current Events assignment that you'll all be doing at some point this semester. CBC.ca is a great website and you can always find a relevant business-related article. Just tonight I checked and found this article. Read it and consider the 5W's. This article is a great example of a current event that while focussing on American news, will have a direct impact on business and ultimately the economy in Canada.

    Sept. 12-13- Economic Resources

    For the next couple of days we will be learning about Economic Resources, also known as "Factors of Production". We started talking about this last week. If you recall, there are three main factors of production :
    1. Natural resources
    2. Human resources
    3. Capital resources
    + Intermediate goods
      We will learn about how all of these resources are combined to create a finished product that we know and love...Jeans! We will be doing a research activity online to find out how entrepreneur, Levi Strauss, came up with the idea to make the popular denim that we still wear today. The activity is called  The Productive Blues. In completing this activity you will discover and then categorize all of the economic resources used to make denim. Then we will watch a video to see all of the different steps involved in the manufacturing process. You'll never look at a pair of jeans the same again!

      September- Chapter 1

      For the first few weeks of school we will be looking at a variety of topics to introduce you to the concept of "What is Business?"  I warn you, as this is your first look at business there is A LOT of ground to cover...the 'building blocks' of business you could say. You may feel a bit of 'information overload' at first, but don't worry. Not all chapters will be as big as Chapter 1 and we will go through the content slowly together. Just make sure to pay attention in class and take good notes! If you learn as you go, it should all make sense and not seem like so much come test time.  Anyway, in the first few weeks we will start Chapter 1 in our textbook, " The World of Business 4th Ed" (as seen below). We will be defining business and then looking at the following topics:

      • Types of Business Ownership
      • Goods & Services
      • Needs vs Wants/Essential vs Luxury Goods and Services
      • Economic Resources aka 'Factors of Production' (Natural, Human, Capital Resources)
      • Supply, Demand, and Price & the relationship between them
      • Factors that affect supply and demand 
      • Supply and Demand graphing
      • Interdependence in business
      • Business Decision-making Model
